What
are the different methods of Sunless Tanning?
There are
several methods of Sunless Tanning. Some methods are
more effective than others, but techniques include
self-tanning lotions, self-tanning sprays, tanning beds,
cosmetic bronzers and mists. The most effective product
is a spray tanner with dihydroxyacetone (DHA).
How
does Sunless Tanning work?
Bronzers
work by staining the skin temporarily. Tanning beds work
by simulating the sun. Lotions, sprays and mists work by
using DHA, which is a colorless chemical that interacts
with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a
brown color change.
Are
there any possible side effects?
With
chemical tanners, there are no side effects, unless you
have an allergic reaction to the ingredients, which is
rare. Tanning beds have the same side effects associated
with prolonged sun exposure.
How
soon will results appear?
Some
Sunless Tanning methods yield immediate results, and
others require hours before taking effect.
Who
are candidates for Sunless Tanning?
Those who
want a quick result, are fair skinned, easily burn or do
not wish to damage their skin with natural sunlight are
candidates for Sunless Tanning.
Who
should avoid Sunless Tanning?
Those with
abnormal skin lesions or certain skin conditions (with
the exception of psoriasis) may wish to avoid Sunless
Tanning.
Is
additional treatment necessary?
Because
the skin naturally rejuvenates itself every thirty-five
to forty-five days, sunless tanning does require
continuing treatments to maintain the desired results.
Instructions
prior to DHA treatment:
Before
applying sunless tanner, exfoliate your skin to remove
the maximum amount of dead skin cells. Do not shave the
day of treatment, because the tanner may cause some
discomfort.
Instructions
for after treatment:
It is
important to apply lotion frequently after Sunless
Tanning to keep the skin moisturized. This will also
help the tan last longer.
